Trail Shelter Project
Friends of the Ouachita Trail (FoOT) has partnered with the Ouachita National Forest to maintain and enhance the Ouachita National Recreational Trail since 2004.  Part of the enhancement effort to the OT is the trail shelter project.  The project calls for adding 12 additional shelters covering approximately 120 miles on the western end of the Ouachita Trail  The projects extends from Talimena State Park in Oklahoma to Highway 27, near Story, Arkansas.  There are 9 existing shelters in the area between Arkansas Hwy 27 and Hwy 9, trail miles 121.7-192.5.  FoOT has been working on this project to add additional shelters in Oklahoma and western Arkansas for several years and in late 2012 received approval to proceed following the completion of the necessary reviews and studies.  The first new shelter was completed in March, 2013. Ouachita Challenge! March 25-26, 2017 The Ouachita Cycling Club is now in its second decade of presenting the annual Ouachita Challenge. This unique event in a sixty plus mile loop provides two days of mountain bike touring and racing on two of the area’s best trails. The Ouachita Trail is known for its challenging climbs, vast technical sections, and scenic views of the Ouachita River. The Womble Trail (an IMBA Epic) is known for its fast trails and scenic views of the Ouachita Mountains and valleys. For the past several years, FoOT has staffed road crossings and aid stations to make this event a success. FoOT receives a considerable amount of funding as a result of providing volunteers for the course and aid stations.  These funds are used to maintain and upgrade the Ouachita Trail. The event provides funding to the Oden School and to other local organizations as well. CLICK HERE for more information.
